The vineyard is beautiful and green – that means the vines are growing! It is now our job to make sure they are in the best possible shape to be able to ripen the grapes! Raising the wires for the tendrils to grow on is what is going on now!
Now that the new planting of Albarino is growing so well, it is time to think about canopy management. That means getting all the posts in place to hold the wires that the vines will grow on.
We have finally finished our 2017 vineyard expansion with the last acre of Albarino vines. Because these were live plants rather than the bench grafts, we decided to row water them in – boy did that bring back memories!
Have you ever been in a situation that seemed to last for hours because it is so miserable? Last week’s hailstorm did last a bit over an hour but seemed to stretch on and on! With major damage to the vines and greenhouse, we are optimistic that all is not lost!
Planting grapevines is always such an exciting time of year because it means we are growing! Adding 5 acres this year, brings the vineyard right up to the driveway of our house and I am soooo excited!
We only have one more day of pruning! Happy dance time! As you can probably guess, we are excited not only to be finished but also about bud break in the vineyard.
We are booking through the vineyard hand pruning. an acre to two acres per day. We have even adjusted our lunch so that now we eat in the vineyard and get right back to work!
We have started precision pruning and boy, is it making a difference in the way the vineyard looks – I can’t wait to show it to you! It is exciting to be getting ready for a new growing season.
It seems that just as quickly as it started, it is over! Pre-pruning took about a week this year and all 32 acres are done. Oh what a difference it makes in the vineyard!
